PARK RAPIDS, Minn. — An inmate jailed for assaulting a police officer faces additional charges after the Hubbard County Sheriff says he attacked and repeatedly stabbed a correctional officer.
Cole Pigeon is now charged with first-, second-, third- and fourth-degree assault for the alleged attack, which happened in the Hubbard County Jail on Aug. 7. Sheriff Cory Aukes says the corrections officer was sitting at a desk monitoring inmates in housing until when Pigeon exited his cell and attacked the deputy, stabbing him multiple times with a shank. Court documents say the corrections officer was able to fend Pigeon off until fellow deputies arrived on the scene to help.
A shank is a sharp piece of metal that can be used as a knife. Sheriff Aukes says Pigeon removed a bracket from a table in the jail's recreation room and fashioned it into a weapon.
The deputy suffered several wounds to his head and face and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids for treatment.
When questioned by investigators, Pigeon reportedly said he had stalked the officer before the attack, adding that he would "stab more officers every chance he gets" and that officers "signed up for this."
