MAKINEN, Minn. — A man is jailed in Duluth on pending charges of attempted murder after he reportedly told authorities he used methamphetamine before he shot at another motorist.
Dispatchers in St. Louis County received a 911 call around 5 a.m. Monday from a person driving on Townline Road in rural Makinen, which is located about 18 miles southeast of Virginia. The caller said someone was firing shots at his or her vehicle.
Deputies responded to the area and quickly located a vehicle matching the description of the shooter's vehicle. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was arrested and taken into custody without incident for attempted second degree murder. He also faces charges of assault with a firearm and drug possession.
Sheriff's investigators say at least one shot struck the victim's vehicle, shattering the rear window.
A search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence and a long gun suspected of being involved in the shooting was confiscated. When questioned, investigators say the suspect admitted to using meth within 24-hours of the incident.
Preliminary information suggests the two drivers do not know each other and that the shooting was random, not preceded by any conflict or incident on the road. Authorities add that none of the shots fired actually hit the victim.
Official charges in the case are expected sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office-Virginia location at 218-749-7134.
