Driver in Carver County chase and standoff awaiting charges

South Lake Minnetonka Police confirm officers fired their weapons during the incident that started in Excelsior and ended in Chanhassen.

CHANHASSEN, Minn — A 33-year-old Bloomington woman is jailed in Carver County on suspicion of several charges stemming from a chase and standoff Tuesday night.

Traffic camera video after 7 p.m. captured an SUV barreling down Highway 41, a police pit maneuver and a rollover crash near the intersection of Highway 5 in Chanhassen.

At the end of the police chase in the video, the video shows officers drawing their guns. But the end of the chase marked the beginning of a four-hour-long standoff.

Following the standoff, the woman driving the car was arrested, and at some point during the incident, officers fired their weapons, South Lake Minnetonka Police confirmed.

As heard in dispatch audio and confirmed by police, officials originally tried to pull over the driver a few miles north, near Highway 7 because a run of the vehicle's license plate revealed an arrest warrant from Illinois.

"The warrant is a failure to appear, aggravated battery out of state. History of fleeing, assault, domestic battery and resisting arrest," a dispatcher informed officers during the incident.

Witnesses near The North Coop restaurant tell KARE 11 news the SUV drove right over the embankment by the restaurant while being chased by police, before heading south on Highway 41 -- that part, again, captured by traffic cameras.

Questions remain concerning what prompted the officers to fire and whether the woman was armed and fired at them. But police say after negotiating with the driver and getting her out of the vehicle, she was treated for minor injuries at a hospital before going to jail.

KARE 11 News is not naming the driver because she's not charged. The Carver County Attorney said charges are expected Thursday morning. Her criminal history include a 2021 conviction in Minnesota for fleeing police and threats of violence.

She's being held in the Carver County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assaulting a police officer and fleeing.
