MINNEAPOLIS — The Hennepin County Sheriff's Department will be implementing body-worn camera's for the deputies.
The Hennepin County board approved a $5.1 million agreement to purchase the cameras, data storage and upgrade Taser equipment.
The company providing the equipment upgrade, Axon Enterprise, Inc. began this month and the entire process could take until Dec. 2024.
A first phase will provide body-worm cameras for deputies, hospital security, crime scene investigations and the emergency services unit. The second phase will outfit the rest of the agency, including courts and detention.
"In an effort to enhance accountability and public trust, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation are rolling out body-worn cameras," the county said in a release.
Hennepin County is the latest to adopt a body-worn camera policy, joining Ramsey County Sheriff, and a number of other city police departments, including Minneapolis and St. Paul.
