MINNEAPOLIS -- iPads are as common in classrooms today as notebooks. Schools aren't the only ones who see value in the technology, thieves do too.

Surveillance video from last Thursday shows a man, identified as Aaron Stillday, punching an 8-year-old boy and running off with the his iPad. A witness went after Stillday and recovered the device. He has been charged with first-degree aggravated robbery.

School districts who issue iPads to students don't just have a usage policy, some like the St. Paul school district, also advise students on safe device transportation. One usage contract for the district states, "iPads do not come out of backpacks until students are at home or school."

In Minneapolis, district policy states missing or stolen iPads must be reported to IT staff and a police report must be filed.

Minneapolis police spokesperson Scott Seroka said they've seen an increase in device theft and suggests people not have their devices out unless it is necessary. Police also warn people to be aware of surroundings and walk in groups if possible.
