MINNEAPOLIS — The man accused of shooting an 11-year-old girl on New Year's Day in Minneapolis has been charged federally after surveillance video showed him firing multiple rounds in the direction of the victim's home.
James Turner Jr. is charged with possession of ammunition as a felon after police used a neighbor's doorbell camera and Snapchat clips to link him to the shooting. Turner, a 44-year-old Fridley man, was also charged last week in Hennepin County with possession of a firearm and recklessly discharging a firearm.
Officers with the Minneapolis Police Department were initially called to the home on reports of a shooting just after midnight on Jan. 1 on the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North. When they arrived, officials found an 11-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the face. According to court documents, the victim told officers she heard shots being fired and went to the window to see what was happening. She was hit by a bullet after going near the window. A GoFundMe identified the 11-year-old as Laneria Wilson.
Court documents say that officers obtained a Snapchat video of Turner prior to the shooting near the home. In the two-minute video, prosecutors say Turner is arguing with an unknown person before the camera turned to show an AR-style rifle laying across the the driver's seat of a vehicle. A neighbor gave officers a doorbell surveillance video that showed Turner fire multiple rounds in the direction of the home.
Since Turner had previous felony convictions, federal law prohibits him from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.
