Man charged after shooting outside Minneapolis mosque

The man who police believe shot someone outside a Minneapolis mosque earlier this week has been charged.

MINNEAPOLIS — The man who police believe shot someone outside a Minneapolis mosque is now facing multiple felony charges.

It happened Monday outside of Masjid An-Nur mosque following evening prayers. According to the criminal complaint, 75-year-old Abdul Kareem was leaving the mosque when he saw a drug deal happening outside. He approached the van and said they could not sell drugs there. The driver drove away, but the complaint states he drove back and shot Kareem.

Yancy Hall of Shakopee was charged with drive-by shooting toward a person and two counts of second-degree assault.

The criminal complaint states witnesses saw the shooting and described Hall and his van. Investigators learned that Hall was under investigation for narcotics and his van was being tracked. Hall was arrested and the criminal complaint states that he admitted to the shooting.

In a press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara pledged more patrols in the area, given what community leaders noted was a recent uptick in crime. Mosque leaders also noted that a plan to increase security around the mosque was being expedited, given the shooting.

Meantime, leaders – both in the police department and the mosque – say they’re hopeful a person they describe as “the most beloved” is able to fully recover.
