MINNEAPOLIS - Charges have been filed against a Minneapolis man in connection with a theft ring that targeted customers of a downtown parking garage for nine years.
Prosecutors charged 34-year-old Calvin Maurice Rogers with felony counts of identity theft and possession of ammunition by a felon.
A criminal complaint filed late Monday details how Minneapolis police executed a search warrant at Rogers' home at 2422 Aldrich Avenue North and recovered nearly 300 stolen items. Included in those items were 75 social security cards, driver's licenses, credit cards, passports and checks. Some of the checks had been filled out in Rogers' name.
Police also recovered ammunition while executing the warrant. Because Rogers has a previous drug conviction he is not allowed to possess guns or ammunition.
Investigators with the Minneapolis Police First Precinct said Monday that Rogers began targeting the Hyatt Regency Hotel parking garage on the 1300 block of Nicollet Avenue in 2006, and has been stealing from cars ever since.
Rogers has five or more felony convictions for similar crimes, which makes him a career offender. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman will seek a higher penalty if Rogers is convicted because he is a career offender,
