MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police, along with the FBI, have made an arrest in a nearly 26-year-old cold case murder.
Jeanne Ann Childs was found stabbed to death in her Minneapolis apartment on June 13, 1993. According to Minneapolis Police Public Information Officer John Elder, a 52-year-old man has been arrested in Waite Park, Minnesota, and is being held on probable cause of murder in the multi-year investigation.
Elder said that in 2015, cold case task force investigators from Minneapolis police and the FBI conducted a comprehensive review of the case with help from the BCA's forensic lab.
In 2018, cold case investigators consulted with the FBI and an online DNA service in an attempt to identify DNA from the crime scene.
Through more DNA testing and "online genealogy website investigation," Elder said the suspect's DNA was deemed "consistent" with that left at the scene of the 35-year-old's murder. .
“We all hope Jeanne’s family can finally find peace as a result of this tenacious effort by officers and agents,” said Jill Sanborn, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis Division of the FBI.
The suspect is being held in Hennepin County Jail and has not yet been charged. At this point there is no known relationship between the suspect and the victim.
