As Minneapolis processes deadly shooting, community seeks out ways to help

Some people are leaving flowers, others are donating to MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell's family.

MINNEAPOLIS — Tributes for Officer Mitchell have been pouring in over the last few days and some have created fundraisers for his fiancé and family.

Many are bringing flowers to the growing memorial at the 5th precinct

"Balloons and flowers are awesome, they're beautiful, but you shouldn’t have to put them on a squad car," said Sarah Brooks as she wrote messages on a cross with her kids. "You shouldn't have to, you shouldn't have to."

Others are turning to nonprofits to pass along donations to Officer Mitchell's family.

The Apostle Supper Club in Saint Paul says every dollar spent there will be donated to the Frontline Foundation, which will deliver proceeds to his family.

There is also a verified fundraiser through the Law Enforcement Labor Services Benevolent Fund.

"We've made the contact with the city with the family," said executive director Jim Mortenson. "She does says this is the platform for where donation should go."

LELS is partnering with the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association as well as the Minneapolis Police Federation to organize donations.

On top of those fundraising efforts, the Minnesota 100 Club has already approved a $50,000 donation for Officer Mitchell's family.

"There are so many good people out there who want to do right by first responders who want to show them that we all appreciate them," said Julie Gotham, the executive director for the MN 100 Club.
