MINNEAPOLIS — A mother who was shot in a car along with her toddler in Minneapolis Sunday night has died from her injuries, making it a case of murder.
Minneapolis police say Lilian Magali Poalacin Perez, 35, was sitting in a vehicle in an alley off the 2900 block of Cedar Ave. with her two-year-old Sunday night when an unknown gunman shot into the car multiple times. Officers responded to the scene just before 9:30 p.m. after ShotSpotter technology indicated four shots had been fired. Officers found a woman, now identified as Lilian Poalacin Perez, wounded by multiple gunshots and her toddler shot in the face.
Police say the child is expected to survive, but MPD said Poalacin Perez died of her injuries Wednesday morning at Hennepin County Medical Center.
“I am deeply saddened to learn that the mother of this child has lost her life in such a senseless act of violence,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, who also expressed great frustration to reporters on the shooting scene Sunday. “This incident is a tragic reminder of how gun violence can - and is - tearing apart families in our community.”
Homicide investigators are looking at evidence recovered from the scene and witness statements to determine the sequence of events that led up to the shooting, and whether the shootings were targeted or random.
So far there have been no arrests. Chief O’Hara is encouraging anyone with information about the to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). There may be a reward for tips that lead to an arrest and conviction.
