ST PAUL, Minn. — Police in St. Paul say 49 scooters from the same company were damaged over the course of three days.
According to St. Paul public information officer Sgt. Mike Ernster, a Spin Rides employee filed a report on Friday about an "unusual amount of damage" to the electric scooters that are left around the city for people to rent.
The Spin employee said on Tuesday, June 25, 10 scooters were damaged. Then on Wednesday, June 26, another eight damaged scooters were found. On Thursday the 27th, he said they found 31 more.
The employee told police that all were found in downtown St. Paul, and appeared to have been smashed on the ground. He said the handle bars were bent, and some brake cables were even cut.
"We've never seen anything like this," St. Paul PD Spokesperson Steve Linders said. "To have 49 scooters damaged in a course of three days is something we haven't seen before. So we're taking it seriously and looking into it."
St. Paul police are investigating. A Spin spokesperson sent a statement to KARE 11 saying, "Our on-the-ground operations team is aware of this, and we're evaluating the extent of the fixes now. We look forward to getting the vehicles back on the roads soon -- and will continue to train our operations team to remain vigilant of vandalism."
St. Paul police say they are relying on the public for any information about the damaged scooters. If you have photos or video, they say they want to hear from you.
