Red Wing man charged with murdering girlfriend before standoff

An investigator noted the victim appeared to have been shot 10 times.

RED WING, Minn. — A Red Wing man is facing a felony murder charge after authorities say he shot and killed his girlfriend before a multi-hour standoff at the home.

It happened Sunday night at a home on Putnam Avenue. That's where the criminal complaint says Darryl Dion Nixon called 911, asking for police.

Nixon had been making suicidal comments and had a gun, court documents state. He also made comments that the victim was "gone." After a more than two-hour-long standoff, Nixon exited the residence and surrendered to the police.

The city of Red Wing identified the victim as 40-year-old Andrea Elizabeth Broyld.

When investigators entered the home, they found Broyld dead on the couch. According to the criminal complaint, an investigator noted it appeared she was shot 10 times. A dozen shell casings were found near her body, court documents state.

Nixon is charged with second-degree murder, with intent but not premeditated, in Goodhue County.
