Shakopee student charged with sexual assault

A Shakopee High School student faces the possibility of decades in prison after being charged with sexually assaulting a classmate.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - A Shakopee High School student faces the possibility of decades in prison after being charged with sexually assaulting a classmate.

Angel Pablo Torres, Jr., age 18, was charged Thursday with first degree sexual assault in the attack, which allegedly occurred Tuesday in a locker room. Investigators say the victim, a 17-year-old female who said she used to be friends with the defendant, told them that Torres asked her to leave class to get a drink with him at the water fountain.

Once there she says Torres grabbed her by the wrists and dragged her into the nearby boys locker room and into a handicapped stall, where he took down his pants. Despite the fact she kept yelling "no, no," the victim says Torres pulled down her pants and raped her for 15 to 20 minutes, causing lasting pain. After it was over Torres allegedly told her not to tell anyone as she pulled up her pants and left the locker room.

The girl immediately reported the assault.

A Shakopee Police officer reviewed surveillance video that supported the victim's story. Investigators then spoke to Torres, who said he didn't want to talk about what happened. He was then placed under arrest.

The victim was examined at St. Francis hospital, and was found to have injuries consistent with the reported rape.

On Wednesday, the Shakopee school district sent the following note to parents regarding the alleged incident:

The district is aware of an alleged situation on Tuesday involving two of our students at Shakopee High School.

As soon as staff learned of the alleged incident, administrators and our school resource officers took the appropriate measures and immediately notified the police department. Our police department and administrators worked closely to investigate the allegations and gathered information regarding the alleged situation. As a result of the investigation, one student was arrested.

The case has been turned over to the Shakopee Police Department and we continue to work together on the case. As police continue to investigate the alleged incident, high school administrators and district leaders are also reviewing the circumstances and conducting an internal investigation.

Due to data and privacy restrictions, we cannot release any further information. However, we continue to be vigilant with our efforts to keep students in our schools safe. As always, we encourage parents and students to notify school officials if they have any safety concerns. We also have counselors and social workers available, if students need additional support.

If found guilty Angel Pablo Torres, Jr., could be sentenced to 30 years in prison according to state statutes.
