LAKEVILLE, Minn. — The Dakota County Sheriff's Office says deputies fatally shot a male suspect during an encounter in Lakeville on Friday morning.
According to a news release, deputies and officers from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office and Lakeville police were serving an Order for Protection, which included an order for the subject, a 36-year-old male, to vacate the residence. The man also had an active arrest warrant for fourth-degree assault of a peace officer.
According to the Sheriff's Office, within seconds of authorities entering the residence, the man opened fire on the deputies and officers and one Dakota County deputy returned fire, killing the suspect. No officers or deputies were harmed in the incident.
Neighbor Cindy Erickson heard the confrontation unfold Friday.
"I heard the young man yelling, 'Get out my house! Get out of my house!' and then I heard 'Gun!' and then two shots fired," Erickson told KARE.
"Then two sheriffs ran out to get their emergency equipment from their car, then I pretty much figured this is not good."
Erickson said police had encountered the man two nights earlier, and he appeared agitated.
"There was an incident a couple night ago over there with officers, about six of them standing in the street. He was outside yelling that they took his dog. This went on for a good five minutes, and then all of sudden somebody said well the dog is inside."
Deputies and officers Friday attempted life-saving efforts, but the man did not survive.
The officers and deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to investigate, as is common practice in officer-involved shootings.
