Overnight shooting at stoplight continues wave of violence in Brooklyn Park

The victim had stopped for a red light at the intersection of County Road 81 and 85th Ave. N when the suspect vehicle pulled up and opened fire.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A woman is recovering after being shot while waiting at a stoplight overnight Tuesday, the latest incident in a stretch of violence in Brooklyn Park.

Police say the incident happened just before 2:40 a.m. when a driver headed northbound on County Road 81 stopped for a red light at 85th Ave. N. As she waited at the stoplight a second vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, hitting the victim in the leg. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A police spokesperson says at this point there is no clear connection between the victim and the unidentified shooter, but the investigation is ongoing. The victim's vehicle was processed for evidence by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Brooklyn Park police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call 763-493-8222.

Tuesday morning's shooting comes on the heels of two additional gun incidents in Brooklyn Park over the weekend, one that was deadly. That follows the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Reese Crenshaw, who was randomly killed while attending a birthday party just days after his high school graduation.

"Reese wasn't just out on the streets messing around or getting in trouble," said his aunt Allegra Sletten. "He was a really, really good kid."

Despite Crenshaw's death and the recent string of shootings, Brooklyn Park community leaders say a lot of progress has been made to curb violent crime in the city.
