Shooting on Van Buren Ave. leaves 1 dead in St. Paul

Police say they received "a flurry of calls" starting at about 1:30 a.m., starting with a request to have a group of people removed from a gathering.

ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul police are on the scene of an overnight shooting that claimed the life of one person.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Ernster says 911 operators began fielding "a flurry of calls" around 1:30 a.m. The first was what he called a routine request to have a group of people removed from a gathering at a home on the 1600 block of Van Buren Avenue, but subsequent calls reported gunfire.

One of the callers said they were with an injured person and were taking them to the hospital.

Responding officers found evidence of a shooting, and soon learned that a man had been taken by private vehicle to United Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. That man was pronounced dead.

"This was not the start to 2024 we envisioned or wanted," Ernster told reporters at a briefing later Monday morning.

Ernster says homicide detectives are interviewing potential witnesses to determine the relationship between the shooter and victim while the department's forensics team gathers evidence at the homicide scene. He said that this is St. Paul's first murder of 2024, adding that the city ended 2023 with a total of 33 homicides.

At this time there are no suspects in custody. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the person who was fatally shot.

Anyone with information about Monday's fatal shooting or the person responsible is asked to call St. Paul Police at 651-266-5650.
