BABBITT, Minn. — A man is jailed in northeastern Minnesota awaiting charges after police say he confessed to killing his two roommates.

Babbitt Police Chief Michael McGregor said in a news release Monday that his department was contacted by Duluth PD shortly before midnight Sunday that they had been in contact with an individual who stated he had killed two people in a residence in the city of Babbitt.

Officers responded to a home on the 38 block of Fir Circle and discovered the bodies of 78-year-old Clifford Johnson and 79-year-old Christine Johnson, both of Babbitt. The suspect, a 54-year-old man with no permanent address, had been staying with them at the time of the alleged killings.

The suspect was booked into the St. Louis County Jail on charges of probable cause second-degree murder. In most cases, KARE 11 does not identify suspects until they are formally charged. A decision on charges is expected in the coming days by the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office.

At this point, authorities have not specified how the Johnsons were killed.

Babbitt is located 17 miles southwest of Ely by vehicle.
