Teen held after vehicle theft, shooting, pursuit

Hudson police say the chase, which began in St. Paul, ended when 7 juveniles bailed from the Jeep and climbed through a window into an apartment building.

HUDSON, Wis. — Police in Hudson, WI say a 16-year-old is in custody following the highway pursuit of a stolen car that was involved in a shooting in Minnesota Tuesday night.

The sequence of events that led to the arrest began just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, when a Ramsey County deputy spotted an occupied Jeep that was stolen, and reportedly been involved in a shooting in St. Paul the night before.

When he tried to pull the vehicle over the driver fled, with law enforcement and a helicopter pursuing the stolen vehicle, with seven juveniles inside, into Wisconsin.

Ramsey County dispatchers informed Hudson police and the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office that the fleeing vehicle was headed their way. A helicopter monitoring the chase followed until the juveniles bailed from the Jeep outside an apartment building on the 1900 block of Aspen Driver and climbed inside a window.

Officers set up a perimeter outside the building and residents were ordered to shelter in place. Eventually, the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Unit made entry into the apartment and took the driver and one passenger into custody. The remaining five suspects came out of a garage without incident.

Hudson police say the standoff lasted about three hours, and involved the use of chemical agents to get the juveniles into custody.

Authorities say the 16-year-old driver remains in custody on pending charges of motor vehicle theft, fleeing police in a motor vehicle and possible weapons-related crimes related to a gun recovered at the scene. The other six juveniles were ID'd and released to their parents.
