Youth volleyball coach accused of having sex with underage girls, producing porn

Prosecutors say Dorian Barrs used his position of trust to engage in sex with girls as young as 13 years old and have them send him explicit images.

SHERBURNE COUNTY, Minn. — A metro area youth volleyball coach has been indicted for enticing underage girls into sexual activity and producing explicit material of him having sex with minors.

The U.S. Attorney's office says 32-year-old Dorian Christopher Barrs used his position of trust as a coach to exploit minors, engaging them in sexually focused conversations on social media and then coercing them to engage in sexual activity with him. The indictment against Barrs alleges that he produced explicit material while having sex with his victims.

Prosecutors say some of the minor victims Barrs solicited have self-identified in records as being as young as 13 years old. The indictment charges the defendant with four counts of production of child pornography, one count of receipt of child pornography and four counts of coercion and enticement of a minor. Barrs made his first appearance in federal court Wednesday.

"It's a different jury pool, a larger jury pool, and there's only a couple of federal courthouses in the state," said legal expert Michael Bryant, who is not affiliated with the case. "You get prosecutors that all they do is work on these kind of cases. It'll be aggressively brought by the government."

Investigators are still working to identify and confirm the identities of many of the alleged victims. The U.S. Attorneys Office is asking anyone who has been victimized by Dorian Barrs or know someone who has to contact the FBI Tip Line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or by email at tips.fbi.gov.

Barrs was most recently listed as an assistant coach with a boys high school volleyball program in the northwest suburbs. The Osseo School District, which includes Maple Grove High School, confirmed that Barrs was an assistant volleyball coach there from 2020-23 but is no longer employed by the district.

The indictment against Barrs came as a result of an investigation by the Carver County Sheriff's Office, with help from Maple Grove and Minnetonka police and the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.
