The Barron County sheriff says a 60-year-old man is in custody after allegedly pointing a gun at deputies and then ramming a SWAT vehicle.

BARRON, Wis. — A western Wisconsin man is jailed and awaiting formal criminal charges after an incident that ended with the suspect ramming a SWAT vehicle with his truck.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said deputies were dispatched just before 10 a.m. Saturday to an address on Highway SS between Chetek and New Auburn after a pair of 911 calls reported a man had pulled into their driveways looking for his child. The callers said they told the man the child wasn't there and he allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Sheriff Fitzgerald said deputies arrived on the scene and found the 60-year-old suspect outside holding a firearm. The Barron-Rusk Emergency Response Team was activated, as was the Eau Claire Regional SWAT Team.

While they tried to negotiate with him, the suspect reportedly pointed a gun at deputies in an armored SWAT vehicle before getting in his pickup and ramming the law enforcement vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended without incident after his truck became disabled. Fitzgerald said he is being held in the Barron County Jail on probable cause domestic abuse, disorderly conduct and endangering safety-intentionally pointing a firearm at law enforcement.

Formal charges could come this week. No injuries were reported.
