Former auto dealer Denny Hecker shuttled between a handful of federal prisons following his conviction in 2010, eventually landing in Pekin, Illinois. He was released from his sentence nearly a year early.

After more than seven years in federal custody, former Twin Cities car dealer Dennis Hecker has been released.

Hecker, 66, a flamboyant businessman known across the Twin Cities, was serving time for forging an estimated $80 million in loan documents involving his auto dealerships.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) hinted in 2016 that he would be released from his sentence a year early. His original release day was July 4, 2019.

Hecker was transferred between prisons a number of times after being convicted in October of 2010, from Duluth to Wisconsin, Indiana to Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Colorado and finally, Illinois.

BOP records show that Hecker was released on Tuesday, July 3.

Prison officials would not release the reason for his early release, saying, "The reason for an inmate's sentence reduction is not always public information, such as in this case."
