CHANHASSEN, Minn. - The high school football stadium in Chanhassen is just five-years-old and already in need of some major repairs. The bleachers designated for home fans aren't safe.
Kaci Ruess and her mom, Renee, found out through an e-mail from the district's principal. In part the e-mail said, "The home bleacher section has significant soil erosion and damage to the plaza. It is not safe and cannot be used until it is fixed. In order to accommodate the size of the crowds, which can top 2,000 people, home football games must be hosted off-site."
Ruess, an incoming freshman, said she has been looking forward to homecoming all summer.
"I was kind of surprised and disappointed because it is my first year at high school and I won't be able to have it at my high school," Ruess said.
A spokesperson with the district told KARE that custodial staff "saw some of the soil coming onto the track."
Tuesday afternoon, a sign with the message "Bleachers Closed" and "Keep Out" was posted on a gate leading to the field. School officials say this is the second time they have had problems since the campus was built in 2009. Back in 2011, the district installed a drainage system.
The school doesn't know what's causing the erosion but a civil engineer is working to identify the problem.
The e-mail sent to parents said the district is also working on a 50-year plan for the complex.
Meanwhile, the Sept. 12 varsity game against Chaska will be played at the Chaska High School stadium.
The district is working out arrangements for the rest of its home games.
