Minneapolis Public Schools budget gap projected to be $110 million next year

In a statement, the district said there are several factors for the gap, including declining enrollment, rising costs and the end of federal COVID-19 funding.

MINNEAPOLIS — Leaders with Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) are actively seeking ways to close an unprecedented budget gap that's projected to swell north of $100 million by next school year.

The district confirmed on Wednesday that the projected budget gap for the 2024-25 school year is expected to be about $110 million, according to recent calculations. In a statement, the district said there are several factors for the gap, including declining enrollment, rising costs and the end of federal COVID-19 funding.

"School and department leadership are working hard to find ways to make cuts while also keeping our students at the center," the district said in a statement.

The calculation included current offers on the table with collective bargaining groups, so the gap could increase as the district works to settle contracts. The board is scheduled to vote on the budget during the June result business meeting.

MPS isn't the only district in the state facing a major budget gap. According to recent calculations, Saint Paul Public Schools' projected deficit for the next school year is more than $107 million.
