ST PAUL, Minn. — The leader of St. Paul's public schools is eyeing a possible move east, to a district in the city where he grew up.
Dr. Joe Gothard is one of three finalists selected as candidates for the superintendent's job of the Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, Wis. The three finalists were selected from a list of 60 applicants for the job.
The other candidates for the Madison post are Mohammed Choudhury, former Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, and Dr. Yvonne Stokes.
A message to families posted on the Saint Paul Public Schools website says the Madison district plans to announce its new leader by early March.
"Dr. Gothard has been an incredible leader for Saint Paul Public Schools since July 2017," reads the post. "He is the 2024 Minnesota Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year. Born and raised in Madison, he attended MMSD schools, and spent most of his career in that district before coming to Minnesota in 2013 to be superintendent of ISD 191."
If Gothard is selected for the Madison job, SPPS leadership says the Board of Education will work with district leadership to set up a transition plan and timeline to attract candidates and select a new superintendent.
