MINNEAPOLIS — The City of Minneapolis has officially submitted its bid to host of the Sundance Film Festival in 2027.
Minneapolis submitted a proposal on June 21 after organizers with the famed film festival announced earlier this year that they would "explore viable locations in the United States to host the Sundance Film Festival beginning in 2027.”
“With our thriving arts and entertainment scene, diverse cultural heritage, and passionate film community, Minneapolis is the ideal backdrop for the Sundance Film Festival,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a press release. “There is no city that embraces the arts quite like we do – and Minneapolis already has a long history of supporting independent filmmakers and their art of storytelling. Sundance would be a welcome addition to our theater community, and we’re excited to throw our hat in the ring to host this world-renowned festival.”
As part of the bid, city officials highlighted Minneapolis' existing infrastructure, its "thriving theater district" and its inclusivity.
“We know festival goers want to be able to meet each other and connect, as is the long-standing tradition of Sundance’s commitment to fostering a network which will continue throughout the year,” added Ben Johnson. Director of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Minneapolis. “Based on the footprint and gorgeous setting of Minneapolis and its amenities, we know the intimacy and hub-like atmosphere festival goers are accustomed to will feel exceptionally familiar in our city."
According to a recent report about the festival's economical impact, the Sundance Film Festival contributed the following to Utah’s economy in 2023: $118.3 million in gross domestic product; 1,608 jobs; $63 million in wages and $12.8 million in state and local tax revenue.
Park City, Utah has been the host of Sundance, the largest independent film festival in the nation, for the past 40 years and will remain the host through 2026. The host for 2027 will be announced later this year or early 2025, according to the Sundance Institute.
