Fashion show with older models serves looks and lessons on life

Models ages 60 to 90 walked the runway for Fashion Week MN.

MINNEAPOLIS — With years of wisdom, older adults are often the greatest models for how to live.

They can also be models, defying norms in the fashion industry, and walking for Fashion Week MN (FWMN). FWMN put the call out for models ages 60 and up to participate in one of its spring season shows, called "I AM Fabulous."

The oldest model casted was 90 years old, a spokesperson said.

"I think age is all about how you feel," model Thomas Hill said. "I don't feel 67, and I know I don't look 67."

Before Hill was ever a model, he was styling other models. He spent more than a decade as a fashion designer before moving into interior design.

Others have also embraced modeling as a new adventure.

"I think part of living your best life is that you have to continue to live," Tene Wells said.

Wells, 71, spent young adulthood running the Shoestring Playhouse, known for casting actors without considering their race. She went on to lead the nonprofit WomenVenture to help women find economic success — which at one point got the attention of Oprah Winfrey on her talk show.

"Most people think you do the bucket list, then you die," Wells said. "I think you do the bucket list, and then you make another bucket list."

"Are you embracing of older age?" KARE 11 Sunrise reporter Michelle Baik asked.

"I think it's about acceptance," she said. "But I think it's acceptance with a vision of what you want. So [with] two knees and a hip, and two spine surgeries later... I just want to walk normal."

These models are redefining beauty for themselves and for others.

"It's showing that we are still here," Hill said. "We are out here, and we are fabulous."

Fashion Week MN continues its spring season with events until Saturday, April 20.
