WAYZATA, Minn. - Wayzata High School was evacuated late Friday morning and school called off for the day after fire broke out in the complex. District officials posted on Twitter that the fire started in the art room, specifically near the kiln.
Students and staff were evacuated as a precaution, and fire crews from Plymouth were joined by engines from a number of neighboring departments. Officials on scene called a third alarm to summon more reinforcements due to toasty temperatures.
In a press release, officials say crews were dispatched to the scene around 10:40 a.m. and found an active fire above the kiln, that was extending up to the roof.
Shortly after 11 a.m. the district tweeted that the fire was contained, but a decision was made to send students home for the day.
The building was quickly deemed safe by fire crews on scene.
