BELLE PLAINE, Minn.- Firefighters battle both flames and extreme cold at a house fire in Belle Plaine.
More than half a dozen fire departments were called to the home in the 9000 block Union Hill Boulevard just after 2 a.m. Thursday.
Firefighters say the homeowner was hospitalized. No word on his condition.
The cold made fighting the flames difficult, said firefighters on the scene. Crews worked quickly to keep the hoses from freezing Water had to be hauled because the nearest hydrant was more than 2 miles away.
Firefighters were rotated to keep them safe.
The families dog made it out of the house, but firefighters say it escaped from rescuers and is missing.
Investigators are working to determine a cause.
