5 shot, 1 killed in 3 separate shootings in Minneapolis

"To have five people shot in three hours is absolutely abnormal."

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Police say five people were shot in three separate overnight shootings, in which one man died.

No one is in custody yet for any of the shootings, which happened in a span of just three hours.

Police say the deadly shooting happened near the 1000 block of W. Lyndale Ave. in North Minneapolis  around 3:21 a.m. They say a fight at a party escalated and two men were shot. A man in his 30's died at the scene. A man in his 20's went to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

About two hours earlier, around 1:17 a.m., police say two men in their 20's were shot downtown, near 2nd Ave N and 3rd St N. Both of their injuries are not life threatening.

The last shooting of the night happened sometime before 4:17 a.m., when police say a man showed up at North Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police say he told them he was driving in North Minneapolis, near 33rd St. and Irving Ave., when he was shot in his car.

Police say they're still investigating, but they don't believe any of the shootings are related.

"To have five people shot in three hours is absolutely abnormal," said Minneapolis Police Public Information Officer, John Elder.

A new unit with the Minneapolis Police Department, called Community Navigators, went door-to-door Saturday morning in the neighborhood where the deadly shooting took place.

Community Navigators, a civilian unit within the Minneapolis Police Department, goes door-to-door the morning after a deadly shooting in this Minneapolis neighborhood.

The group, which started in October, responds to neighborhoods were traumatic incidents have taken place. They talk with neighbors to tell them what happened and make sure they're okay.

"[We were called] to this [scene] in particular, because there was a lot of young people around and it's multi-family housing," said the group's supervisor, Glenn Burt.

"It's really important for us to knock on every door and to let people know that we're here and we care," he said.

Anyone with information on any of the shootings is asked to call police or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by going to www.crimestoppersmn.org.
