Newest COVID vaccine not widely available yet

Several area clinics and pharmacies say they're not offering it at this time.

MINNESOTA, USA — Families who have COVID-19 shots on their back-to-school list might have to wait to get it until after school starts.

The new vaccine was just approved, but several area clinics and pharmacies say they're not scheduling anyone at this time.

According to Minnesota Department of Health data, COVID hospitalization levels are "low" in many counties, including Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Stearns counties.

Still, the CDC reports that Minnesota is one of almost 30 states marked "very high" in wastewater tests detecting traces of the infectious disease.

During this so-called summer spike, the CDC recommends getting the latest vaccine to fight the latest variants. Days ago, the FDA approved updated formulas manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer.

In Minnesota, at least nine variants are circulating. The updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine is formulated to protect against the Omicron KP.2 strain, an MDH spokesperson said.

And yet, several local hospitals are not yet offering the newest shots. In fact, Children's Minnesota says its supply is expected to arrive in mid-September.

"It is recommended for all kids over 6 months of age," said Dr. Pamela Chawla, chief of general pediatrics at Children's Minnesota. "There is a waver that we go over to make sure families are really well aware of what the vaccine is."

HealthPartners reports the vaccine will be available in early fall, telling patients to "please check back for more information."

"We're not scheduling COVID-19 vaccinations at this time," its website reads. "The COVID-19 vaccines for 2024-2025 should be available in early fall. Please check back for more information and to make an appointment."

There are similar statements on the websites of M Health Fairview and North Memorial Heath:

"We are not currently scheduling COVID vaccines as we are awaiting updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccines and guidance from the CDC. Please check back occasionally for updates on vaccine availability."

"At this time, COVID-19 vaccines are not available within our North Memorial Health Clinics. Please contact your local pharmacy for availability. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Walgreens is accepting appointment now, but only for Sept. 6 and onward.

Its website reads, "COVID-19 Vaccine Update: An updated COVID-19 vaccine is available that targets the current variants of COVID-19. Appointments available for ages 12+ starting 9/6."

Meanwhile, the store's competitor, CVS, appears to be still scheduling and giving shots now. The same goes for hospital systems Allina Health and Hennepin Healthcare.

After the summer spike, expect a winter wave. Experts say it's important to time out your shot to protect yourself and others from getting the virus in the coming months. For instance, the CDC says if you've recently had COVID, consider delaying your dose by 3 months. Those at high-risk of severe illness should get it once available.
