ST PAUL, Minn. —
"Certainly we're still seeing high numbers of viral panels being positive, whether it's COVID, flu, RSV or other viruses," said Dr. Gagnon.
Dr. Gagnon, is the vice chief of staff at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare and a pediatrician.
"We specialize in care for kids with disabilities," she said. "Any viral burden on them and their immune system is heavily felt."
According to a newly released report from the Minnesota Department of Health - flu and RSV cases have declined, with 264 people in the state hospitalized with the flu last week - compared to 400 the week before.
MDH says 2,601 patients have been hospitalized so far this year, but hospitals say they're still on high alert.
"Despite the MDH curve looking it took a small decrease, for the last week or two, which we're always thankful for on those larger levels, we are still in the pediatric field, feeling the impacts," she said.
The early start to the flu season is also leading to shortages of children's pain relief medicines in pharmacies.
"It's the first time I as a parent have been faced with the shortage of trying to find Tylenol and Motrin," she said.
But as the flu season kicks into gear, Dr. Gagnon is urging everyone to take precautions during the holidays.
"If you're feeling like our family members are under the weather," said Dr. Gagnon. "Maybe take time for yourself, and participate in part of the activities."
