Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman going on medical leave

Freeman says he needs time off because of the high stress of running the office.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman has announced that he is taking a medical leave to deal with health issues related to the "high stress" of his job.

Freeman said in a statement that his doctors recommended he take time away following a physical, earlier this week.

"After my physical on Wednesday, my doctor and others have suggested that I need some time away from the high stress of running the Hennepin County Attorney's Office in order to restore my physical well-being," Freeman said in a news release. "I fully expect to return stronger and sharper and able to guide this office in its mission to protect the public safety and provide justice."

While Freeman is on leave for several weeks, chief deputies David Brown and Lolita Ulloa will take over day-to-day operations of the office.

According to the news release, "the office will have no further comment."
