A high school football game Saturday turned tragic for the Hill-Murray School community after a player collapsed and was eventually placed in a medically induced coma.
Zach Zarembinski, a senior lineman for Hill-Murray, took himself off the field during his team's 28-0 playoff loss to St. Paul Johnson, according to a GoFundMe raising money to help him and his family.
Zarembinski is listed in critical condition at Regions Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.
He collapsed shortly after on the sideline and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for a brain bleed, the GoFundMe stated.
Zarembinski is currently in a medically induced coma. His family has set up a CaringBridge page to keep family and friends updated on his condition. The last post on the site said there have been no changes to his condition.
According to a release sent by the school, the Zarembinski Family is “grateful for the quick action of Coach Bercich, Trainer Laura Henn, Dr. Hofkens, the referees and all the first responders from St. Paul Police, Fire and Rescue that responded to our call. We ask for your continued prayers for our strong, brave son Zach.”
The school is calling for a day of prayer and support on Thursday, Nov. 1, and asking everyone to wear green in honor of Zarembinski. A mass for Zarembinski was scheduled at the high school's varsity gym at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday.
