History of inmate who killed corrections officer revealed

Edward Muhammad Johnson was orphaned when he was just 12-years-old. His father killed his mother in 1988, leaving Johnson and his sister behind.

MINNEAPOLIS - It begins with a murder-suicide case that made headlines all over Chicago in 1988.

The archives from Chicago's NBC affiliate WMAQ show a tragic scene where then Chicago police officer Edward Johnson shot and killed his wife Selena Johnson at her home.

Selena Johnson was also a patrol officer during the time she was shot.

"A tactical officer dead by his own hand, his patrol woman wife dead because he had shot her," the reporter with WMAQ said. "Two kids, minus two parents."

In the early morning hours in September of 1988, Johnson fired eight shots into his wife Selena. Their two children, just 12 and eight-years-old, stood outside of their bedroom door when the homicide happened.

"The bottom line in this case is that a woman is dead and those children are going to be seriously compromised for the rest of their lives," an anti-domestic violence advocate said in the interview. "It should not have meant to happen."

One of those two kids is Edward Muhammad Johnson, currently serving time at Stillwater prison for homicide.

Johnson is now about to possibly serve more years, after the death of corrections officer Joseph Gomm.

"I do not care if it occurred ina prison," Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said Thursday in a news conference. "In fact it probably makes it more egregious. So we are going to bring everything we can at this."

Court documents from 1988 indicate that a Johnson had been surrounded by a pattern of domestic abuse between his parents.

That pattern of violence was also evident during his time at Stillwater prison.

"Discipline record of this individual is significant," Corrections Commissioner Tom Roy said. "He has served about 1,700 days in segregation."

Orput assured the community at the news conference that justice will be served.

"Anytime an offender assaults a corrections officer, we are there to charge them," Orput said. "When we charge them we seek a conviction and a consecutive sentence."

Orput explained he and the investigators are working together to come up with appropriate charges for Johnson.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident as well. They announced Gomm died by homicide due to blunt force trauma.
