SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota soccer fans have waited three years for a place of their own.
Two years in someone else’s home, borrowing TCF Bank Stadium for two seasons, gets frustrating after a while.
That patience paid off Saturday with the inaugural game at Allianz Field.
The Minnesota United took on the New York FC in a cold home opener in Saint Paul.
A sea of blue scarves filled the stadium with a sold-out crowd of 19,796 fans.
Fans didn’t have to wait long to see their first goal in the new stadium.
Only 13 minutes into the match the Loons scored their first goal.
New York responded scoring two goals in less than two minutes.
Fans cheered even louder, seeing their hometown team down 2-1.
Their devotion was rewarded with a tying goal two minutes later.
A third goal came at the 32-minute mark, putting Minnesota up 3-2.
The 2nd half was less exciting with only one goal from the opposing team.
The game ended with a 3-3 tie, but many fans still felt like winners, thanks to a new stadium, and a bright future, now that Minnesota soccer has a new home in Saint Paul.
The Minnesota United will play its next home game at Allianz Field at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 24th against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
