An organization is on a mission to make it easier to give back to the community. And that mission is not new.
For 100 years now, HandsOn Twin Cities has been connecting organizations with people who want to volunteer.
KARE 11 Sunrise is celebrating the organization's anniversary by sharing its success stories. One such example is Hirut May, a domestic abuse survivor.
"I was going (through a) very ugly divorce and I've been through a lot," May said. "I have struggled for four years. My life, it was upside down."
But now, it's rightside up thanks to Avivo, a partner of HandsOn Twin Cities.
Avivo offers chemical and mental health recovery services and helps almost 20,000 people in and around the metro each year.
"This organization has just deep belief in all people," Avivo president and CEO Kelly Matter said.
Matter says Avivo is one of the only places in the country to both help people recover and find work.
"I have the best job ever because what Avivo does more than any organization I've known is achieve impact," she said.
But you don't have to be an employee to transform lives. Last year Avivo had almost 700 volunteers. Many came directly through HandsOn Twin Cities.
May says they've been a huge help.
"I can do everything now," she said. "No one stop me."
She's enrolled in Avivo's maintenance custodial training program and already has a job as a custodian for the City of Minneapolis.
"I have super, super, super nice supervisor," she said. "Don't give up. Don't give up. Somebody will be there for you."
