Lake Mille Lacs resorts feeling pinch of walleye ban

Resorts are counting up their losses since DNR brought an early end to walleye fishing season.
Fishermen set out on the last day of walleye season on Mille Lacs Lake.

GARRISON, Minn. - As summer slips away, resorts on Lake Mille Lacs are counting up their losses since state wildlife officials brought an early end to walleye fishing season.

Some are hoping that the Department of Natural Resources will allow an ice-fishing season for walleye when the ban ends Nov. 30. The agency is expected to decide whether there will be a winter walleye season after it considers the results of next month's survey.

Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Landwehr says walleye numbers remain at historic lows and won't bounce back within the next couple of years.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports that Landwehr and others point out that there are other fish on Mille Lacs, but resort owners say anglers come for the walleye.
