Sheriff: Shots fired in Brooklyn Center were self-inflicted

A man is in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading police on a chase, according to the Hennepin County sheriff.

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. - The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says a police chase ended with a man shooting himself in Brooklyn Center on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Rich Stanek, police officers from Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Center and Crystal responded to a call of a suicidal person in a vehicle in the area of County Road 81 and Highway 100 at about 3 p.m.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle the driver fled. Officers performed a PIT maneuver and stopped the vehicle on the 4900 block of Brooklyn Boulevard, according to Stanek.

Stanek said the fleeing man had a gun, and when officers made contact he fired shots. Officers did not return fire, but they deployed less lethal munitions, Stanek said.

The man was brought to the hospital, where Stanek said he is in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brooklyn Boulevard was temporarily closed from 49th Avenue North to Lilac Drive North, parallel with Highway 100.
