Local street artist 'yarn bombs' Metro Transit bus

If your typical morning commute involves a Metro Transit bus, you may have noticed something extraordinary driving through the metro.

MINNEAPOLIS - If your typical morning commute involves a Metro Transit bus, you may have noticed something extraordinary driving through the metro.

One bus driving around the Twin Cities is completely covered in yarn. From the outside, it looks like your typical metro transit bus -- picking people up, dropping people off, but it's what is inside of this bus that will make you smile.

"Getting on here transports people to a forest and it's kind of magical, and fun and unexpected," said the local street artist who goes by the name Knitteapolis.

This local street artist in a bearded disguise, knits and purls for a purpose. She calls it "yarn bombing."

"Yarn bombing is a form of street art. It is an eco-friendly, soft form of street art, where you take yarn, knit, crochet, felt, whatever you want and you attach it to an inanimate object to make it pretty," Knitteapolis said.

After nearly a year in the making, the Yarn Bus was born and so was the hashtag because well ... people love it.

"They are saying it's amazing. There are a lot of people trying to catch the yarn bus because it's only one bus, and a lot of people are seeking it out," said Kathy Graul, a Metro Transit spokesperson.

Knitteapolis is hoping that with every stitch, there's a smile

"That's really the only reason," Knitteapolis said. "It makes them laugh, it makes them smile because it is completely unexpected ... and fun and it kind of makes you daydream."
