16-year-old girl struck and killed in Minneapolis

Police said a woman drove into a crowd after an altercation in downtown Minneapolis early on Saturday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police said six people were injured, one fatally, after an altercation led to a hit-and-run early on Saturday morning.

Police said officers were called to the area of 5th Street North and Hennepin Avenue just before 12:30 a.m. for a report of a crash that injured several people. Officials said six people were taken to Hennepin Healthcare.

One of the victims was a 16-year-old girl, who later died at the hospital. Police have not released her name at this time.

Police said among the injured were two 14-year-old girls who had non-life-threatening injuries. Three others in their 20s were also injured, including a woman who is in critical condition.

No other information has been released about the other victims as of Saturday afternoon.

Police said preliminary information shows there was an altercation between a group of people in the middle of 5th Street North. During a press conference, MPD Chief Brian O'Hara said they believe teenagers, the suspect, and others were involved. Then the female suspect got into a vehicle and drove in reverse on Hennepin Avenue. She then drove the wrong way on 5th Street North into a crowd.

"This was clearly not random," O'Hara said. "This individual was present for that fight that was happening with the crowd of people so clearly targeted by this person as senseless and inexplainable as that is. It is. It is not random."

The woman drove away from downtown, police said, and was followed by witnesses. Multiple agencies, including Minneapolis police, Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies and State troopers stopped her vehicle in the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North.

The 22-year-old woman was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail for murder.

This incident is still under investigation.
