MADISON, Wis. — A lucky lottery ticket worth $15.1 million was sold in the small community of Luck, Wisconsin Wednesday.
The Megabucks jackpot-winning ticket for the Jan 4. draw was sold by Wayne's Food Plus, located in the town about 90 minutes northeast of Minneapolis.
Store manager Paul Wondra said he learned Thursday morning that his store sold the winning ticket -- in Luck, of all places. He described the rest of the day as a whirlwind.
"Lots of phone calls," Wondra said. "Lots of questions, curiosity. Who won? We don't know."
Travis Close, who was shopping at Wayne's on Thursday night, said it was "special" that the ticket was sold in Luck.
"In our small town and our small grocery store that we're very lucky to have here, it's amazing to have [the ticket sold] here," Close said. "You can get Lucky in Luck!"
The winning numbers were: 4-6-12-17-27-28 and the jackpot was the largest for the Wisconsin-only lottery since it rose to $22.2 million back in 2015.
"Congratulations to Wayne's Food Plus for selling the winning ticket," said Wisconsin Lottery Director Cindy Polzin. "What a great way to start 2023. We can't wait to meet the lucky winner."
Wayne's Foods Plus also receives $100,000 for selling the ticket, but store management said they're considering donating some of that money to charity for the good of the community.
The Megabucks is a separate game from the multi-state Mega Millions, which currently has an estimated jackpot of $940 million.
The odds of winning the Wisconsin game are much higher, with a 1 in 6,991,908 chance. Compare that likelihood to your chances of winning the Mega Millions, which sit at 1 in 302,575,350.
