2 dead after plane crash near aviation festival

Two people died after their plane crashed south of a large aviation festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Two people died Monday in Wisconsin after a plane crashed in a farm field. 

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, they and other agencies responded to the scene at 12:15 p.m. Monday after being alerted to the crash by the ATC in the Wittman Airport tower. 

It happened south of Oshkosh, near Old Knapp Road and Nekimi Avenue, two miles from the EAA Airventure event. EAA stands for the Experimental Aircraft Association, whose annual Airventure event began Monday. According to its website, more than 600,000 people attend the event. 

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office said when crews arrived to the crash, the plane was fully engulfed in fire. The two people inside the plane are dead. Their names have not been released pending family notification. 

the crash is still under investigation by the NTSB.
