MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — Two dogs perished in a fire that damaged a home in Maplewood Monday.
Maplewood Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Schroeder said engines were dispatched to a structure on the 2400 block of Pond Ave. E. just after 6 p.m. on reports of a house fire. A neighbor spotted smoke coming from one of the windows and called 911.
Fire crews arrived and found a working fire inside the house. They immediately laid water lines and started work to put down the flames. Firefighters were eventually able to enter the structure and found the bodies of two pets who did not survive.
Assistant Chief Schroeder said the home is currently uninhabitable.
Engine companies from Oakdale, North St. Paul and White Bear Lake provided mutual aid in fighting the fire.
Investigators are working to determine a cause.
