PINE RIVER, Minn. - Two people have died in the crash of a small plane south of the Pine River airport in north-central Minnesota.

The victims have been identified as John Witt, 32, and Stacy Sundquist, 32. They are both from Pine River.

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch tells the Brainerd Dispatch their names are being withheld pending notification of family. He expects to release more information Sunday.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the crash of the single-engine Piper Cub J-4A was reported just after 6:30 p.m. Friday. The NTSB says several witnesses reported it took off and appeared to be "low and slow" before crashing one-quarter mile away.

The sheriff says fuel leaked from the plane but there was no fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration registry indicates the plan was registered to a Pine River man. It was manufactured in 1940.

FAA and NTSB investigators were at the scene Saturday.
