Teen dies as another teen's life hangs in the balance after 2 shootings in Minneapolis

The shootings occurred within two hours of each other in separate parts of the city.

MINNEAPOLIS — Officials have identified the 18-year-old who died in a Minneapolis shooting Sunday night. Another shooting that same night left a 17-year-old fighting for her life.

The first shooting happened just before 8 p.m. near 27th Street East and Nicollet Avenue. When officers responded, they were told a gunshot victim was taken to a house on the 2600 block of Third Avenue South.

There, police found the 18-year-old — identified Tuesday as Javon Jarule Stevenson — with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers provided medical aid until he was rushed to HCMC via ambulance.

Stevenson died at the hospital. His manner of death was ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

Minneapolis police said the incident began as a verbal altercation before escalating.

The second shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. near Dowling Avenue North and Fremont Avenue North. Minneapolis police said officers were called to the area and found a 17-year-old girl seated in a car with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Officers provided medical aid until the teen was transported to North Memorial Health. Minneapolis police said later, a 30-year-old man arrived at the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. He told officers he had come from the shooting scene on Dowling Avenue.

No arrests have been made in either incident, but Minneapolis police said they are still investigating.
