2 women die in New Brighton house fire

Fire investigators said the fire appears accidental, but the house did not have working smoke alarms.

NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. — The New Brighton Department of Public Safety said two women have died following a house fire in their home early Wednesday morning.

In a Facebook post Thursday, city officials said firefighters pulled Diana Davies, 78, and Maya Davis, 37, from the burning home around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, but both women later died.

New Brighton Fire Marshal Kip LaMotte said the preliminary investigation shows the fire likely started accidentally, however, firefighters say the home did not have working fire alarms, prompting LaMotte to caution others about the importance of smoke detectors.

"Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they're properly maintained," LaMotte said in the social post. "Working smoke alarms give you the critical seconds you need to escape a fire."

The Ramsey County Fire Investigation team is leading the ongoing investigation.
