ROBBINSDALE, Minn. — Two women were seriously hurt Monday morning after the vehicle they were in was hit by a BNSF railway train in Robbinsdale.
Captain John Elder of the Robbinsdale Police Department said officers were called to 42nd Avenue North and Railroad Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m. on a report of a train that struck a car.
Two women were found trapped in a mangled Toyota RAV4. Authorities said emergency crews had to use the "jaws of life" to get them out of the vehicle.
The 69-year-old driver is in "serious but stable condition" while the 88-year-old passenger is in "serious condition but not stable condition at this time," according to Captain Elder.
Two people on the train at the time of the crash were not hurt.
Captain Elder said the preliminary investigation indicates that the train was traveling north and the car was going eastbound. "It appears that the warning lights and audible bells were operational at the time of the crash." He added that the railroad crossing is not equipped with stop arms.
