AURORA, Minnesota — Authorities say a child has died after being involved in a single-vehicle accident in northern Minnesota Tuesday.

A statement from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department said deputies were alerted to the incident around 4 p.m. through an iPhone crash alert, pinging just south of Aurora, Minnesota, in the area of Vermilion Trail and Harris Bay Road. The statement said a citizen who happened upon the scene a short time later also called police to report the accident, saying a child had become trapped underneath an overturned vehicle.

Emergency responders immediately started life-saving efforts on the 5-year-old when they arrived on scene, but sheriff's office officials said the child did not survive.

An adult driver and another child were also inside the vehicle at the time of the accident, both of whom were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The sheriff's office said road conditions were "packed ice" due to recent snowfall and freezing temperatures across the region.
