EDINA, Minn. — Editor's Note: This video aired on May 25, 2024.
A 5-year-old boy drowned in an apartment pool in Edina, according to a Hennepin County Medical Examiner's report released Monday.
The child was transported to Children's Minnesota where he died around 12:15 a.m. on June 12. The death was ruled an accident, according to the Medical Examiner's report.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Water Patrol responded to the incident alongside the Edina Police Department.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintended non-injury-related death for children ages 1-4 in the U.S., and among the leading causes for older kids. Edina nonprofit Abbey's Hope Charitable Foundation visited KARE 11 in May to share water safety tips for families.
- Teach children to have adult permission and supervision when entering the water.
- Parents actively supervise children while swimming and when near water. Over 70% of drownings happen during non-swim times.
- Enroll your child in swim lessons to teach them a lifesaving skill.
